Orston Art Exhibition

Over the weekend of 21-23 May 2010, the 4th Orston Art Exhibition took place.  More than 50 artists participated and there were over 250 exhibits on display. These included lots of different styles and media – not just paintings, but also embroidery, silver jewellery, mirrors, collages and photography.

Visitors were once again invited to vote for their favourite exhibit and most people received at least one vote (!). At one point it looked as if there would be a tie, with Peter Henson’s “The quiet wood”, Yvonne Kirk’s “Winter Blues II” and Taryn Lee’s “Eclipse” receiving equal numbers of votes.  But overall Muriel Mees’ tryptic entitled “Climax” was the winner.

Both the Aslockton and Orston art groups were present, with several artists exhibiting for the first time.

As in previous years, the preview evening was very pleasant with wine and nibbles. While over the weekend itself, lots of homemade cakes were consumed.  Thanks go to everyone who enabled this to happen: from the artists, to those who helped set up and dismantle. To the stewards, refreshment team, cake bakers, and the Thatch and the Limehaus (raffle prizes).
Approximately ÂŁ1000 was raised for hall funds, and the artists sold around ÂŁ1400 worth of goods.    A number of people will have gone away with new pictures for their walls or jewellery to wear. So all in all, a successful weekend!

Phileas P Souper - Super!

If you missed this one you missed a treat! I don’t think anyone knew quite what to expect from a music and mime show that promised a magical trip around the world in 80 minutes so the audience were not prepared for what was to come when they settled into their seats for the start of the show. The opening music suggested something funereal and, when an apparent fracas outside the Hall started up, there was an air of nervous expectation!

In through the Hall doors burst a funeral party. Coffin held high, the bearers made their unsteady way to the performance area and there followed a magical mystery tour around the world, as they remembered the travels of their dear departed friend, Phileas P. Souper, the intrepid globetrotter extraordinaire! France, Russia, China, Peru and Egypt were evoked in music and mime, with the occasional shipwreck and magical bedstead along the way!

It had to be seen to be believed – the miming was very funny (the magic bed really did seem like it was flying!) and the musicians could turn their talents to an extraordinary range of instruments from standard clarinets and ukuleles to strange, hidden xylophone type thingummybobs! It was laugh out loud stuff - it was a shame that there were so many other local events keeping people away, but we recommend that if you get the chance you should catch this show – just the thing to banish those winter blues and lighten hearts. Burns Night We may be a long way from Scotland, but the Burns Night Supper has become something of a tradition at Orston Village Hall. On 23rd January, we welcomed an enthusiastic crowd come to enjoy good food and entertainment. A full house saw the ritual piping in of the haggis and listened in awe as Stuart Davison gave the Address to a Haggis in his own inimitable style before the ceremonial cutting of said haggis! As usual the food went down a treat – the traditional “haggis, tatties and neaps” was tasty and filling! Particular thanks are due to Wendy Richardson, who organised and cooked the haggis. After the food, the now replete revellers were encouraged on to the dance floor by the band, to work off the calories they had consumed! With much confusion and more laughter, the ceilidh was soon in full swing and at the end of the evening everyone went home exhausted but happy! See the photos below.

New Year’s Eve Goes with a Bang!
The annual village get-together was a great success yet again. The hall was full, people had been busy in the afternoon dressing their tables, installing chandeliers, candles, flowers and much more. It looked a veritable treat. If the food on my table was anything to go by then starvation is a thing of the past! As nobody came over from other tables to steal ours I assume they were similarly catered for as well.
The usual anticipation welled just before midnight and as the clock struck everyone sang “Auld Lang Syne” with great gusto.

An excellent event, with our thanks due to the Village Hall Committee.

Some photos from the evening below. If anyone has any others of the evening they don’t mind sharing then please email them to me. Thank you.

Lament - Certainly Not!
Friday 6th November saw another great event at Orston Village Hall.
Lament, a latin jazz group drawing on influences from Brazil and Spain, provided a fantastic night’s entertainment. The five piece band had the floor filled with dancers from Orston and further away.

The event was promoted by Orston Village Hall and Village Ventures.
