Orston & Thoroton WI

We are a friendly group, currently 25 strong, which meets the second Wednesday of each month in TheVillage Hall, Orston at 7.30pm. Members live in Orston and Thoroton plus neighbouring villages. We combine a programme of speakers with outings to the theatre, a summer garden visit and a Christmas meal.
On
8 September we will be welcoming Val Henstock who will be speaking about 'Burtons of Smithy Row'. As we have a link with the Burtons through Orston Hall, we will be making this an Open Meeting to which all Orston residents are welcome. Val  has a wealth of historical knowledge as we recently found out on one of our guided walks with her. She is sure to tell us something we never knew and we may be able to tell her a few titbits! A small fee of £2 ( to include Tea and Buscuits) will be requested for this event - do come.

Our July meeting was held according to tradition at our President's home in Thoroton. We welcomed Pamela Marsh who gave us a few tips on how to look after ourselves. We all listened intently with straight spines and both feet planted firmly on the floor. Having behaved ourselves during her talk we then spoilt it all by digging into a fantastic supper washed down with a glass of Pimms!

We welcomed Jenny Bailey, Chair of the Agricultural Show committee to our February meeting. Jenny organises the WI area at the County Show with truly terrifying efficiency. Some of our members have volunteered to help with the refreshments in the past and are welcomed with an apron and no-nonsense instructions on how to serve a never ending queue with cups of tea, bacon butties and cake. The customers however provided light relief with such quips as “you look as though you’re having fun”, and “which month on the calendar were you”.  The preparations for this year’s Show are already in hand to include competitions, displays, and sales and the baking of some 200 cakes for those refreshments!

We decided to go out for our Christmas meal in the New Year and nearly 20 of us enjoyed a fantastic meal at
The Thatch in the middle of February. The fresh snow lying outside helped with the festive celebration.
